What is the JR East Rail Pass? Who can buy?

The JR East Pass is an economical and flexible rail pass to travel around Eastern Japan. Travelers visiting Japan from foreign countries for sightseeing can purchase.

What is the JR East Rail Pass?
The JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area or Nagano, Niigata area) is a special discounted pass available only to customers visiting Japan (with a short-term visa no longer than 90 days) and holding a non-Japanese passport.
It allows unlimited rides on all JR East train lines in the JR EAST PASS (Tohoku area or Nagano, Niigata area) designated area.

Start with a trip from Narita Airport or Haneda Airport to Tokyo, for example, then ride around, and maybe hop aboard the Shinkansen or a limited express. In addition to JR East lines, the JR EAST PASS(Tohoku area or Nagano, Niigata area) allows rides on some non-JR trains in the Izu and Nikko areas.
While in Japan, take advantage of this great offer to see a lot more for a lot less.
Who can buy the JR East Rail Pass?

The JR East Pass is a special discounted pass available only to travelers visiting Japan from foreign countries for sightseeing. Customers without temporary visitor visa also can buy this pass now. The JR East Pass allows unlimited rides on all JR East train lines. In additional to JR East lines, the JR East Pass allows rides on some non-JR trains in the Izu and Nikko areas. While in Japan, take advantage of this great offer to see a lot more for a lot less.

* Japanese living abroad can not use this pass
Visitors with dual citizenship in Japan and another country will not be able to use a JR EAST PASS if they entered Japan with their Japanese passport.


Caution:
Even if you visit Japan with an Exchange Order, to be turned in for a JR East Rail Pass, the exchange cannot be made unless you have "temporary visitor" status; if you enter Japan under any other official status, such as "trainee" or "entertainer", you can not change the Exchange Order for a JR East Rail Pass.
Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, "temporary visitor" status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.
When you exchange to JR East Rail Pass, you must submit the original Exchange Order. A copy is not acceptable.


How to obtain? How to use?

Purchase an Exchange Order before you leave for Japan and exchange the voucher in Japan. You are able to purchase the voucher through the JTB USA website.

3.Let's use the JR East Rail Pass!
After you arrive in Japan, take your Exchange Order to an exchange location.
Your passport is required.
You will receive your JR East Pass upon confirmation of eligi- billity.
Select consecutive five days within 14 days of issuance, including that day, when you want to use the JR EAST PASS. You do not have to designate your five days of use when purchasing.

How to make a reservatioin

Seating can be limited, so please make your reservations early. If no reserved seating is available, you may use the non-reserved seating. JR East does not refund the difference between the price of a reserved and a non-reserved seat in these situations. Once you have successfully exchanged your Exchange Order for a JR East Pass there are 2 ways for you to make a seat reservation.


Make a reservation at a Station:
Visit a JR Ticket Office (Midori-no-madoguchi) or Travel Service Center (View Plaza), located in most major JR East stations, and present your JR EAST PASS to reserve a seat.


Make an Online Reservation:
Some JR East Shinkansen and limited express seats can be reserved online.



Other Usage conditions

*The JR EAST PASS is valid on ordinary cars. To ride on Green Cars, GranClass, individual compartments, Liners or sleeper cars, an additional purchase is required, such as a limited express or sleeper ticket. See the station staff for further details.


You can reserve seats in advance before you boarding with no extra charge at JR ticket offices.

The information on the voucher is not allowed be changed.

Refunds for vouchers can be obtained at the place of issue within one year of the date of issue. The specified service fee and communication charges will be deducted from the refund amount.
Refunds for rail passes can be obtained at the place of exchange prior to the starting date. A service fee corresponding to 20% of the price in Japanese yen stated on the rail pass concerned will be charged per rail pass. No refund is made for rail passes on or after the starting date.

If you lose your voucher it can not be reissued.
