Other attractions in Gifu reflect Nobunaga's spirit of hospitality and leadership. Day 1: GIFU


Begin your journey in Gifu City with a scenic ascent via the Mt. Kinka Ropeway, leading you to the historic Gifu Castle. Perched atop Mount Kinka, this iconic castle offers stunning panoramic views of the city and a deep dive into the samurai history and legacy of the region. Learn about the castle's strategic importance during the Sengoku period, a time when Japan was divided among warring feudal lords. One of the most inuential figures of this era was Oda Nobunaga, a daimyo who played a crucial role in the unification of Japan. Nobunaga was known for his innovative military tactics, including the use of firearms, and his ruthless pursuit of power. His efforts laid the foundation for the eventual unification of Japan under the Tokugawa Shogunate. Every autumn, there is a festival called the Gifu Nobunaga Matsuri held to celebrate the achievements of Oda Nobunaga.After your visit to the castle, embark on a leisurely stroll through the enchanting Kawara-machi district. This historic area, with its traditional buildings and quaint shops, has ourished as a riverside port for merchants since the era of Oda Nobunaga. Wander through the narrow, winding streets adorned with charming lattice housing and nostalgic red post ofice boxes. Many establishments have preserved their original structures, offering a delightful array of shops that include Italian and Chinese restaurants, cozy cafes, sweet shops, and stores selling an assortment of unique goods. One of the highlights of the area is the array of traditional Gifu goods available, including roasted ayu sweetfish, traditional Japanese sweets made from sweetfish, Gifu uchiwa fans, and a diverse selection of other unique items. Next, visit the Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum to gain an in-depth understanding of the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara.
