From the historic village of Shirakawa-go to the relaxing waters of Gero Onsen, and from the artisanal traditions of Seki City to the exquisite paper-making of Mino City, this itinerary promises to be a journey of discovery, relaxation, and inspiration. Gifu has always been celebrated for its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The inclusion of Gifu’ s Shirakawa Village, Nagara River Basin, and Gero Hot Springs in the Green Destinations Top 100 list for 2020, 2021, and 2022 respectively, highlights the global acknowledgment of Gifu's commitment to sustainability.

Day 1: SHIRAKAWAGO – GERO ONSEN


Begin your journey by driving into the heart of history at the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This quaint village, nestled in the mountains, is renowned for its gassho-zukuri houses, with roofs shaped like hands clasped in prayer. Many of these homes are still inhabited, creating a picturesque landscape with the surrounding rice fields. From Shiroyama Viewpoint, enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the village. Stroll through the village and visit Wada House and Nagase House, important cultural assets offering a glimpse into traditional living. The serene atmosphere and rich history of the village make for a memorable experience. Treat yourself to a traditional meal at a local restaurant to end your day of exploration. Next, journey to Gero Onsen, one of Japan's top three hot spring resorts. Famous for its therapeutic waters, Gero Onsen offers a relaxing retreat with healing hot springs. The town also features Gero Onsen Gassho-mura, an open-air museum showcasing traditional thatched-roof houses. Immerse yourself in Japan's cultural heritage as you wander through the village, explore preserved homes, and participate in hands-on workshops to learn traditional crafts. No visit to Gero Onsen is complete without indulging in local cuisine. The region is celebrated with its delicious Hida beef. Enjoy a kaiseki meal at your ryokan, featuring seasonal dishes and locally brewed sake. Relish a blissful time indulging in delicious food and hot springs.

Day 2: GERO ONSEN


After breakfast, take a stroll through the Ideyu Morning Market held at the entrance of Gero Onsen Gassho Village. The market features a variety of local specialties such as tomato juice, blueberry jam, local sake, etc, along with shops selling Japanese crafts and antiques. Next, relax in nature while listening to the soothing sounds of the river and the wind. Visit the waterfalls of Hida-Osaka, where you can hike through the natural wonders created by volcanic activity around 54,000 years ago from the eruption of Mt. Ontake. This area boasts over 200 uniquely shaped waterfalls that are sure to captivate you. Choose from a range of hiking courses, from casual to challenging, and explore at your own pace. Walk through the river, feel the mist on your face, and adventure through uphill, downhill, and secluded paths.The area offers seasonal pleasures, from fresh greenery and birdsong in spring to vibrant autumn foliage and fish jumping in the streams during the fall. After returning to the Gero Onsen town, enjoy a relaxing foot bath or savor local gourmet cuisine while soaking in the charm of Gero Onsen.

Day 3: GERO ONSEN – SEKI – MINO – GIFU


Embark on a journey from Gero Onsen to Seki City, an essential destination for enthusiasts of samurai culture and Japanese craftsmanship. Seki City boasts a long-standing tradition of sword-making, with over 700 years of history. Visit the Cutler Sanshu Seki Hamono Museum to delve into the meticulous art of sword-making and learn about the cultural significance of these iconic weapons. Explore local cutlery workshops where you can witness the dedication of artisans who continue to preserve this ancient craft. Continue your exploration in Mino City, world-renowned for its traditional Japanese paper, Mino Washi. The craft of making Mino Washi has been passed down through generations, and you can observe artisans at work and even participate in hands-on workshops at Mino-Washi artisan shops. Learn about the history and techniques behind this traditional craft and gain a deeper understanding of its cultural significance. After immersing yourself in the world of Mino Washi, take a leisurely stroll through the Udatsu Wall Historical District. This well-preserved merchant area from the Edo period (1603-1868) features unique udatsu, raised walls built to prevent the spread of fires. As you wander through the narrow streets, you'll be transported back in time, surrounded by beautifully preserved merchant houses and charming gardens. After enjoying every moment as you delve into the rich traditions and serene beauty of these remarkable destinations, head to your next preferred destination.
