Kansai, located in the center of the main island of Japan, is steeped in ancient history, religion and culture. Traditional Japanese beauty spreads throughout Kansai. This itinerary takes you to not only iconic, must see spots but also nostalgic hidden gems, where you can find a different Japan.

Day 1: Fukui - Awara Onsen


Arrival at Fukui. Fukui is home to Zen Buddhism, Echizen 
pottery, popular with history buffs, Buddhist scholars, nature 
lovers, and those in search of culinary adventures. Visit 
Eiheiji and learn about the core teachings of Soto Zen and 
tour the temple. Then try zazen seated meditation led by one 
of the temple’s monks. Sit down, clear your mind, and simply 
exist in the moment. Take a stroll around the Temple Town. 
Visit Maruoka Castle, one of the oldest remaining castle 
towers in Japan. Enjoy a traditional ryokan stay in Awara 
Onsen. Relax and unwind with the town’s natural hot springs, 
then explore some of Fukui’s most iconic coastal scenery.

Day 2: Awara Onsen - Shiga


Today, proceed to Shiga, home to Lake Biwa, the largest 
lake in Japan that offers a rich natural environment of water 
and greenery. Its magnificent and varied landscapes are 
presented as the ‘Eight Views of Lake Biwa’ and the ‘Eight 
Views of Omi’ for their scenic beauty. The area, which has 
flourished as a leading cultural and economic center since 
ancient times, has a deep historical culture, including historic 
temples, shrines, the footprints of heroes from the Warring 
States period and beyond, which are still carefully preserved 
and handed down to the present day. Visit Hikone Castle
one of only five castles listed as a National Treasure. Visit a 
beautifully preserved merchant town, Omihachiman and 
learn the history of the area.

Day 3: Shiga - Kyoto


Today, visit the Miho Museum, designated by ChineseAmerican architect I.M. Pei that bears many of his signature 
design elements. Then visit the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural 
Park in the Shigaraki area, recognized for centuries as one 
of Japan’s six great pottery regions. Then, transfer to Kyoto.

Day 4: Kyoto


Begin your full day sightseeing in Kyoto with a visit to 
beautiful Arashiyama Bamboo Forest which gives you the 
feeling of entering another world. Visit Kinkaku-ji Temple
(Golden Pavilion), a Zen temple whose top two floors are 
completely covered in gold leaf. Move to Kyoto Imperial 
Palace, which was used as the residence of Japan’s 
Imperial Family until 1868. Stop by Nishiki Market, a 
narrow, five block long street lined by more than 100 small 
shops and restaurants.

Day 6: Kyoto - Misasa Onsen, Tottori


Depart to Tottori. Nestled between mountains and sea in 
Western Japan, Tottori is a region of unparalleled natural 
beauty and an ideal destination for travelers seeking offthe-beaten path. Visit Tottori Sand Dunes and The Sand 
Museum, which are the most renowned destination in 
Tottori. Beyond sightseeing, visitors can try a wide variety 
of activities. Take a Uradome Coast Sightseeing Cruise
Misasa Onsen, the historic hot spring town is a delightful 
place to enjoy a leisurely stroll.

Day 7: Misasa Onsen - Kaike Onsen


Visit Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple. Enjoy climbing a path 
that has long served as a training site for mountain ascetics 
to cleanse impurities while passing ancient temples that 
stud the steep rocky slopes of Mt. Mitoku. Visit the historic 
merchant quarters, Kurayoshi’s Shirakabe Storehouses
and see the former seat of power for the Hoki region. 
Tonight, enjoy Kaike Onsen, selected as one of Japan’s 
100 best spots to watch the sunrise. The view from this hot 
spring resort has a beautiful coastline, white sandy beaches, 
green pines in the foreground, and the towering form of Mt. 
Daisen in the background.

Day 8: Kaike Onsen - Yonago Airport or Next Destination
